Devices

The Windows firewall

To accept other devices, Keepfin on Windows listens on one network port while devices are turned on. Windows may ask you about it.

Updated November 5, 2026 · For Keepfin 1.0

What Windows asks#

The first time devices are used, Windows may ask whether Keepfin can communicate on your networks. Allow it, so your phone and other computers can reach this PC on your home network.

Per-user and all-users installs#

  • If you install Keepfin Setup for all users, the installer adds firewall rules for Keepfin (TCP port 47215 to reach it, and discovery) on every network, because Windows calls a new network "public". It removes them again when you uninstall.
  • If you install for yourself only, or use the Portable EXE or the MSI, there is no rule, so Windows asks for permission the first time you use devices.

If it does not work#

  • Devices says it could not start if another program already uses the port. Close that program or restart.
  • Windows may be blocking other devices. Settings → Devices then shows Windows Firewall is blocking other devices at the top: press Allow Keepfin (Windows asks for permission once).
  • Some routers, guest Wi-Fi networks and VPNs keep devices apart. Pair with a QR code or an address instead.

Turning it off#

Switching Devices on off in Settings → Devices stops Keepfin listening. On Android the button is Turn off devices under Advanced.
