Play from another device

Every device knows your whole library. If a file is on another device, you can often play it from there, without copying it.

Updated November 5, 2026 ยท For Keepfin 1.0

What the labels mean#

An item whose file is not on this device shows a label in the library:

LabelMeaning
On Hisham's PCAnother device has it and it is connected. You can play it from there.
On Hisham's PC (not reachable)Another device has it but is not reachable now. Keepfin tells you when it was last seen.
Not on this PC / Not on this phoneNo paired device that can play its files is available.

Playing it#

Tap or double-click the item as usual. Keepfin plays it from the other device while it is reachable. Seeking works, and nothing is saved on this device. When the other device is away, Keepfin says so instead of failing silently.

The other device must allow it: Play from here. See What each device may do.

Keeping a file here instead#

Streaming is for the moment. To keep a file on this device, add a copy or include the space or playlist in a copy that this device holds.

Away from home#

Streaming over mobile data uses data like any video or music app. It works only if the devices can reach each other, for example through Tailscale (see Away from home).
