Getting started
What is inside the Keepfin folder
The Keepfin folder is your library. Copy it to a new computer or point a new phone at it, and your files, playlists and history come back with it.
What you will see#
Keepfin\
Music\ your Music space (by playlist or album)
Videos\ your Videos space
Downloads\ everything else: posts, photos, clips (by site)
<your space>\ every space you create gets its own subfolder
.keepfin\ hidden: the library data- Everything is in one place. Music no longer goes to a separate Windows Music folder, and videos no longer go to the Downloads folder.
- Files you drop in by hand are noticed and listed in Needs review, where you choose whether to add them.
- A space can live outside the Keepfin folder as a linked folder (an existing music collection, for example). It works normally but is not copied by Keepfin.
The .keepfin folder: why not to edit it#
Inside the Keepfin folder is a hidden folder called .keepfin. It holds the library: playlists, history, favourites, tags, play counts and which copies hold what. It is what lets the folder travel.
How it works
The library data is written as small, checked files. Each device adds its own, and Keepfin merges them. That is why a copy on a drive, a cloud account or another device can all carry changes without one overwriting another. If a piece is missing or damaged, Keepfin fetches it from another copy rather than guessing.
What stays on each device#
Some things never go into the folder, so a copy or a shared folder never carries them:
- sign-in information for sites and cloud accounts (private to the device, and stored encrypted),
- the download engine and its updates,
- temporary files and caches,
- downloads that are still running,
- window and screen preferences.
Checking and opening the folder#
On Windows
Settings → Storage & copies shows where the folder is, how full the drive is, each space with its size, and Open folder. Check files looks for every file Keepfin knows about and tells you if any are missing. Change location… moves the whole folder to another drive or folder: Keepfin shows the plan first, checks every file in the new place and restarts once from there. You can keep the old place as a backup copy.
On Android
Settings → Storage & copies shows the folder, the free space and Check files. If Android stopped letting Keepfin use the folder, Keepfin says so and offers Choose the folder again; nothing is missing. If the folder is on a memory card that is out, put the card back.
Moving the folder or using it somewhere else#
Moving the folder is safe: a new drive letter, another computer or a phone does not break playlists or history. To use a Keepfin folder on a new device, choose I already have a Keepfin folder on the first start and pick it. To keep a second copy that stays up to date, use a copy.
