Getting started
Install Keepfin on Windows
Keepfin for Windows comes as an installer (recommended), a portable file that needs no installation, or an MSI for managed installs. All are free, with no account.
Setup, Portable or MSI#
All three files are on the official download page, which links straight to the latest release.
- Keepfin Setup is the normal choice. It installs Keepfin, adds it to the Start menu and updates itself: when an update is ready, Restart and update installs it and Keepfin reopens by itself.
- Portable EXE runs from the folder you put it in, with nothing installed. It is handy for a USB drive. Updating means closing it and replacing the file by hand with a newer one.
- MSI is for IT and managed installs. You update it by installing the next MSI over it.
Install it#
- Download Keepfin Setup, the Portable EXE or the MSI from the download page. Keep the file name, so you can compare it with the release.
- Open the file. For Setup or the MSI, follow the installer. For the Portable EXE, open the downloaded file from the folder where you want to keep it.
- Start Keepfin. The first start asks how you want to use Keepfin and where your Keepfin folder should live (see First start).
The unknown publisher warning#
Current Windows builds of Keepfin are not code-signed, so Windows may say it does not recognise the publisher. That warning is Windows being careful. It is not a verdict on the file, either way.
Before you continue, check that the file came from the official release and compare its checksum, which the download page shows and explains. If you are unsure, stop and ask someone you trust.
Windows and your network (for devices)#
Keepfin only listens for other devices when you turn on Devices (see Pairing). Windows may then ask whether Keepfin can use the network.
- If you installed Keepfin Setup for all users, the installer already allows Keepfin through the Windows firewall, on every network. It removes that rule again when you uninstall.
- With a per-user install, the Portable EXE or the MSI there is no such rule. If Windows blocks other devices, Settings → Devices shows Allow Keepfin, which fixes it with one Windows prompt.
More in The Windows firewall.
Uninstalling#
Uninstall Keepfin like any Windows app. Your Keepfin folder (your music, videos and library) is not part of the app and is left where it is.
